about

Bagnio is set amidst the debauchery and excess of San Francisco's infamous Barbary Coast - in those wild years after the gold rush of 1849. The protagonist in the song takes what little gold he has and decides to spend it in one of the notorious Bagnios, or brothels. He comes to regret this fateful decision.

lyrics

Bagnio

I hit town a day ago
My pockets filled with a little gold
I asked a fella for where to go
He pointed me towards the bagnio

I made my way down Kearney Street
With blood and bile beneath my feet
Padfoots in the darkened doors
Catcalls from the Chinese whores

These streets are hard and these streets are mean
His eyes were red and his face was lean
He tried to take my gold well he found my knife
On cold cobblestones I left him lying

I wiped his warm blood from my blade
Then a hollow prayer I made
I didn’t pay him no more mind
These days are filled with killing times

I made it to where the fellow had said
The windows barred and the door was red
A smell crept from the room within
Of flesh and booze and mortal sin

I ducked my head and I stepped inside
My eyes adjusted to the light
Then my jaw dropped and my eyes went wide
Well that wicked scent it filled my nose
A tingle ran down to my toes
The host told me my drinks were free
If I could find a girl wearing underclothes

The girls they beckoned me to drink
And the whiskey had a cryptic stink
It burned my throat and it punched my guts
My head began to sink

Then the room it started spinning round
My heart broke into a panicked pound
I reckoned God had struck me down
Therein that bagnio

Whoa the bagnio
It bent my mind and warped my soul
Where I’m bound for I don’t know
Goddamn the bagnio

I woke up on this wooden deck
My eyes a blur, my head’s a wreck
I’m aboard a sailing ship
We’re on a distant trek

The captain he’s a cruel man
I’m a victim of a vicious plan
I never should have dared to stand
Therein that bagnio
